How to care for your beanie so it lasts for years

Washing, drying, pilling, storage: the simple habits that keep your beanie looking good for several winters.

A beanie you wear every day from November to March deserves a little attention. The good news: it doesn't ask for much.

Washing

Wash it rarely: airing it is enough most of the time. When it does need a wash, do it by hand in cold or lukewarm water with a gentle detergent (a wool detergent if it's wool). Don't rub: gently press the fabric in the water, then rinse.

Drying

Never in a tumble dryer or on a radiator. Squeeze out the water by pressing the beanie in a towel, without wringing it, then let it dry flat in the open air. That way it keeps its shape.

Pilling

Pills appear when a scarf or collar rubs against the fabric. A fabric shaver or a textile comb removes them in seconds without damaging the fabric.

Summer storage

Put it away clean and fully dry, in a drawer or a cloth bag. A lavender sachet or a piece of cedar keeps moths away.
